At the end of our fact finding mission in 2011, Isatou Ndow head of Education at Gambia College and Joe Griffin of GIVE agreed to explore a collaborative role in the mentoring of Trainee Teachers who were working full time in the classroom.
The Irish Teachers were asked to use their teaching skills and experience to support, encourage and guide these young teachers as they began their teaching careers.
The vast majority of the young Gambian teachers were welcoming, enthusiastic and anxious to do their best despite huge difficulties and lack of resources.
Irish teachers were very much appreciated for their help and guidance by the Trainee Teachers. They were helped to improve classroom management strategies, and shown how to become more lively, light-hearted and interactive with the children. Together they looked at the uses of locally available resources for concrete classroom experience in Maths and other areas of the curriculum.
This was a very successful collaboration, one that will continue on a much larger scale next year. Your help and participation in this area would be of immense value in the progression of this project – please contact us.
